Speckled Wood

Scientific Name: ( Pararge aegeria )
One of our most common woodland species, the Speckled Wood is identified by its brown upper wing which is decorated in several yellow “speckled” patches. Usually found in woodland areas, this medium sized butterfly can be spotted basking in the sunshine at Ryhope dene-mouth. The habitat here not only offers shelter from the wind, but also contains areas of damp grassland and shade that this species requires.
