Dolphin Spotting Session (08/06/2025)
Did you know our coastal waters are home to a number of cetacean species? That’s the group name for whales, dolphins and porpoises. Join COAST Sunderland as we celebrate World Ocean’s Day with a seawatch for cetaceans. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen in this area during the summer months, but we might also be lucky enough to spot the shy Harbour Porpoise, the smallest cetacean found in UK waters. We will also keep a look out other marine mammals like grey seals as well as a variety of summer-visiting seabirds such as gannets and terns which can be seen diving offshore.
We will set up near the entrance to Roker Pier and record the species we spot. No binoculars? No problem as we will have some available to borrow on the day. However, if you do have a pair then please bring them along!
This event is open to all ages but please note than under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear weather appropriate clothing.
