Great Crested Grebe

Scientific Name: ( Podiceps cristatus )
One of our most elegant and graceful waterbirds, the Great Crested Grebe can be seen across the UK, performing their enchanting courtship dances in the spring months.

The largest of the native grebes in the UK, they are best identified by their white slender neck which meets a large orange ruff just below the head. They have pale cheeks and a dark plume of feathers at the very top of their head and a slender brown body.

Great Crested Grebes are currently green listed in the UK and are not covered under the special protected area designated along the Sunderland coastline.
This species can be found country wide in a variety of aquatic habitats from local ponds, inland lakes and reservoirs and all along the coast where they regularly dive for fish species.
