Grey herons are extremely tall birds with long legs, reaching approximately 1 metre from bill to tail. They have grey backs, a very long white neck, bright yellow bill and a black eye stripe. They fly with their necks tucked in and long legs stretched out behind them, making them unmissable in the air. They will often emit a harsh “kraaaank” call when they are about to take off or in flight.

Grey Heron
Scientific Name: ( Ardea cinerea )
The Grey heron is an unmistakable visitor to our coastline due to their large size.
They can be seen along our rocky shore, standing incredibly still as they patiently wait for the right moment to strike their prey.
Grey heron are currently green listed in the UK and are not covered under the special protected area designated along the Sunderland Coastline.
You are most likely to see them resting or stealthily foraging along the rocky shore. Good locations to spot them include Whitburn bents and Ryhope beach. Always remember to follow our guidance when it comes to reducing bird disturbance.
