Meadow Brown

Scientific Name: ( Maniola jurtina )
Once one of our most widespread species, the Meadow Brown population has declined in recent years. This is mainly as a result of agricultural intensification destroying grass species that are the foodplant of meadow brown caterpillars. These medium sized butterflies can be identified by the dark brown and orange wing pattern which boasts a tiny white dot surrounded by a slightly larger black dot. This distinctive dot is also present on their underwing which is a pale brown.
