Small Tortoiseshell

Small Tortoiseshell

Scientific Name: ( Aglais Urticae )

One of our most common and widespread butterflies, the Small Tortoiseshell is one of the first butterflies to emerge in spring and is commonly seen within our gardens and grasslands throughout the year.

These butterflies are recognised by their orange colouration with a blue around the edge of the upper wing. They are best distinguished from the other orange butterflies by the black and white striping along the top of their upper wing.
