Grey Seal

Scientific Name: ( Halichoerus grypus )

Grey Seals are the largest species of seal found in the UK with some males reaching 2.6m in length. They are distinguished by their dark grey and brown fur and are sometimes referred to as being “dog-like” due to their long, muzzle-like nose and parallel nostrils. They are often seen foraging for fish offshore or displaying a behaviour called ‘bottling’ where they raise only their head above the water to scan for threats.

Seals are incredibly sensitive to disturbance so please always take care to move away from them if they are hauled out on the beach and never let your dog approach them. Often seals that are hauled out are just resting and regaining energy before heading back out to sea. However, if you are concerned about the welfare of an adult or pup then please contact British Diver's Marine Life Rescue (BDLMR) who will assess whether intervention is required.
