Bottlenose Dolphin

Bottlenose Dolphin

Scientific Name: ( Tursiops truncatus )
One of our most iconic marine mammals, the Bottlenose Dolphin can be found throughout UK waters. They are best identified by their large, stocky grey bodies and short beaks. They can be distinguished from the Harbour Porpoise by their dorsal fin which is a more common sickle shape and taller than the triangular fin of the porpoise. Bottlenose dolphins are a social species and typically found in communal groups known as pods. They can regularly be seen foraging and breaching off Roker Pier during the summer months.
